Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Year's and got lots of time to relax! We got right back in the swing of things today and here's what we did:
Writing-We began a unit on expository writing. Students will be writing a research paper on a country of their choice. We will discuss how to evaluate sources, paraphrase, and much more. This unit will take the majority of the third quarter and I encourage students to begin looking into different countries they may wish to research.
Reading-In keeping with the non-fiction theme from writing, we are learning about the non-fiction features of text.
Math-We began Chapter 11 by going over mental math with basic facts and lots of zeros!
Word Study-Groups 1 and 2 got their new lists.
Social Studies-We did a TFK about some important events from 2011.
Homework:
Reading-Just a reminder that students should be reading for at least 20 minutes per night. Please help your child get into a good habit of reading nightly.
Writing-Students need to write in their Writer's Notebooks at least twice a week for at least ten minutes each time. I have told them to date their entry and put an H by it to show that they wrote it at home. The topic of the writing is their choice.
Math-WS 11.1
I sent home a sheet for the Six Flags Reading Minutes. To earn a free ticket to Six Flags, students must read at least six hours by February 21 and have the sheet filled in and signed/initialed by a parent.
Also, next Friday is Muffins with Mom from 7:45-8:15. See the flyer that went home today for more information.
Have a great night!
