January 31st

Here's what we did today:
Writing-We continued to work on our opening paragraphs today.

Reading-We analyzed the way in which the author wrote the article about school uniforms and found proof for her opinion.

Social Studies-We did a TFK and looked at some of the non-fiction features.

Math-Students worked on a practice test for tomorrow's division test.

Math2-We learned different ways to classify triangles.

Homework:
Writing-See previous post to post attention grabber of opening paragraph to blog.

Math-Study Chapters 13-14 (I gave students a lot of extra worksheets that they can use for practice--They are optional and are just meant as a study aid.)  WS 18.2 on triangles DOES need to be completed and handed in.

**Tomorrow is our field trip to Sheldon.  We will be back for our usual lunch.  I told the kids to make sure to dress a little nice :)

Country Report Attention Grabbers

Muffins with Mom (Long Overdue!!)

I hope everyone had a nice weekend!
Here's what we did today:
Writing-We wrote our opening paragraphs and organized them by writing an attention grabber, body information, and a thesis.

Reading-Students visited the library and met in literature circles.

Social Studies-We began Chapter 5 and talked about pioneers and the Missouri Compromise.

Math-We learned how to interpret the remainder in division word problems.

Math2-We learned about different types of polygons and went on a hunt for some examples!

Homework:
Reading-Read for at least 20 minutes each night!

Writing-Students need at least two Writer's Notebook entries this week.  Some students are still working on their body paragraphs.  They need to complete this tonight or they will fall behind.

Math-WS 18.1, WS 14.6--Long Division Test is Wednesday.

January 27th

Here's what we did today:
Writing-Most students finished up their body paragraph drafts!  We will start the opening paragraph on Monday.

Reading-We took a look at an article on School Uniforms and pulled out the facts and shared our opinions on the topic.

Social Studies-We began our next unit of study on the Pioneers by looking at one of Laura Ingalls Wilder's diary entries from her journey west as an adult.  Students began to write diary entries from the point of view of a pioneer.

Math-We began larger division problems with two bring down steps.

We also had the January reward party.

Homework:
Writing-Finish up the body paragraphs if needed.

Reading-Literature Circles meet on Monday.

Math-WS 14.3--Division test will be Wednesday.

Here's what we did today:
Writing-We continued drafting our body paragraphs and talked about transitions.

Reading-Students debated their view on video games based on the article we read and also met in literature circles.

Social Studies-Chapter 4 test

Math-We learned how to use compatible numbers to make division estimates.

Math2-Chapter 17 Quiz

Homework:
Writing-Just a reminder that all students should be writing in their Writer's Notebooks at least twice a week for at least 10 minutes each time.  Some students are having trouble remembering this.

January 25th

Here's what we did today:
Writing-We began drafting our body paragraphs.  We learned different, creative ways to write topic sentences and discussed the body and closing of the paragraph as well.

Reading-We discussed more about the way the author organized the article on video games. 

Social Studies-We completed the study guide for tomorrow's test.

Math-We tried a predict and test strategy to solve some division word problems. 

Math2-Students used a grid to solve problems.

Homework:
Reading-Literature Circles meet tomorrow.

Writing-Some students are still not finished with their research.  This needs to be completed or they will fall behind on their draft.

Math-WS 17.4, There will be a quiz over Chapter 17 (Geometry) tomorrow.  Students have a blue packet of definitions.  We have covered up to perpendicular lines.

Social Studies-Study Chapter 4--Test and packet due tomorrow.

January 24th

Here's what we did today:
Writing-We (mostly) finished up our research!  Tomorrow we will draft our first body paragraph.

Reading-We read an article discussing the pros and cons of video games and examined the way in which the author organized the information.

Math-First off, thank you so much for all the support you gave your kids with long division last night!  It really showed today!  We continued with long division and I met in small groups with the students to see any areas they are still struggling with.  I see a lot of progress! 

Math 2-We went over the line relationships of intersecting, parallel, and perpendicular.

Homework:
Math-WS 13.4, practice side, WS 17.3, all

Social Studies-Chapter 4 test and packet due on Thursday.  We will review tomorrow.

January 23rd

I hope everyone had a great weekend!  Here's what we did today:
Writing-We researched some more and begin to choose which facts to include in our reports.  Tomorrow will be our last day for research.  We will begin drafting on Wednesday.

Reading-Students visited the library and met in literature circles.

Social Studies-We watched a National Geographic video on Lewis and Clark.

Math-We worked very hard on Long Division. 

Homework:

Social Studies-Chapter 4 test and packet due on Thursday.

Math-WS 13.3--all, Please help your child with this tonight . . . We use the phrase "Does McDonald's Sell CheeseBurgers?" to remember to "Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Compare, Bring down".  Many students are having difficulty knowing which number to divide by after the bring down step.

January 20th

Here's what we did today: 

We had a very busy morning!  After block we got to watch the Kindergarten Teddy Bear Parade as well as a Jump Rope for Heart assembly!

Writing-Students continued their research.

Social Studies-We learned about the Louisiana Purchase and Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery.

Math-We learned . . . . Long Division!  We also went over angles in our Geometry time.

Homework:
Reading-Lit. Circles meet on Monday

Math-WS 13.1, WS 17.2 (Most students finished this one), Correct test

Social Studies-Chapter 4 test will be Thursday.

January 19th

Here's what we did today:
Writing-We continued with our research today and are answering a lot of our questions about the chosen countries.

Reading-Students met in their literature circles and have been working on each other's thoughts.  I am seeing a lot of improvement in their book discussions!

Social Studies-We watched a video  about the early French explorations of the Mississipi River and the surrounding areas when looking for the Northwest Passage.

Math-Students worked very hard on the Chapter 12 test.  I had them do many of the questions twice so as to double check their work and avoid silly mistakes.  They'll get these back tomorrow.

Homework:
Writing-By Monday all students need to have answered all their research questions and be ready to choose which facts they would like to include in their paper.  We'll continue this tomorrow.

Reading-Literature Circles meet again on Monday.

January 18th

Here's what we did today:
Writing: Students worked on answering some of the questions they generated about their paragraph topics yesterday.  They are doing some great research!

Reading-We examined some more text features in an article.

Social Studies-We began Chapter 5 and talked about some of the first French Explorers to make their way to Missouri trying to find a Northwest Passage.

Math-We did a lot of Math today!  We will be integrating Word Study (no contract though) into Writing time and using our normal Word Study time to do geometry.  This will help us to fit everything into before testing begins.  First we reviewed for tomorrow's test on Chapter 12.  Then we began Chapter 17 and went on a hunt for points, lines, line segments, rays, and planes.

Homework:
Writing: Students who did not finish writing questions about their topics from yesterday need to do so tonight so they can focus on research tomorrow.

Reading-Literature circles meet tomorrow.  Most students are already prepared, but some have brought home their book and ThinkMark.

Math-Study Chapter 12 (Know your multiplication facts!)--WS 17.1

I hope everyone had a fabulous three day weekend!  We had a busy day today with Ability Awareness and got to meet some interesting people!  Here's what else we did:

Writing-We began to decide topics to focus on within our chosen topics.  For example, students writing about the geography of their country may choose to write about countries that border their country, landforms, etc.

Math-We learned how to multiply large amounts of money and where to put decimal points and commas.

Homework:
Reading-Lit. Circles meet Thursday

Writing-Write in WN twice this week.

Math-WS 12.4-odds and MR, Chapter 12 test is Thursday

Happy Friday the 13th!  I hope everyone who was able to make it to Muffins with Mom this morning had a great time enjoying some snacks and reading with their child!  Pictures will be posted early next week.  Here's what we did today:

Writing-We began to narrow down our research into more defined topics.  Students are choosing at least three topics to focus on in their report.

Reading-We took a look at an article and discussed some important features.

Social Studies-Students took the Chapter 3 test.

Math-Students worked in centers on 3x2 multiplication.

Homework:
Writer's Notebook-Students should be writing at least twice a week in their Writer's Notebook.

Math-WS 12.2, evens and all of MR

Tuesday morning we will have Ability Awareness Day and there is no school on Monday.  Have a great long weekend!

Here's what we did on this cold, snowy day:
Writing-We learned how to paraphrase information by putting it into our own words.

Reading-Students met in literature circles and worked on expository text features.

Social Studies-We reviewed for the Chapter 3 test.

Math-We began 2 by 2 digit multiplicaiton . . . Ask your child about the Turtle Method!

Homework:
Writing-Make sure to have a book on your country by tomorrow.

Math-WS 12.1-odds, all of MR--Please show work on the graphing paper provided.

Social Studies-Study Chapter 3--Packet due tomorrow

Here's what we did today:
Writing-We looked at a website to evaluate the reliability of some online sources.  Here's the link: Tree Octopus.  Students spent time researching their chosen country.

Reading-We went over the December Reading Tungsten and took January's.

Math-Students took the Chapter 11 test.

Word Study-Groups 1/2 took their test while Groups 3/4 did a buddy check.

Homework:
Writing-All students need a book on their country by Friday.  Many students already have one.  Also, don't forget about the Writer's Notebook.

Word Study-Groups 1/2--contract due tomorrow, Groups 3/4--test tomorrow.

*Don't forget that tomorrow is Early Release! 
*Friday is Muffins with Mom from 7:45-8:15.

I hope everyone had a great weekend!  Here's what we did today:
Writing-I introduced students to a star sheet we will use to organize our country essays.

Reading-Students visited the library.  We also began a poster on expository texts and met in literature circles.

Social Studies-We reviewed the tribes we've already discussed and also learned about the Sac and Fox.

Math-We reviewed Chapter 11.

Word Study-Groups 1/2 did a buddy check and Groups 3/4 worked on their contracts.

Homework:
Read

Write-Write in your notebook twice this week.

Math-Study for the Chapter 11 test tomorrow.

Social Studies-Chapter 3 test on Friday, Packet due Friday

Here's what we did today:
Writing-We compared the Rwanda book from yesteray to a book about Mexico in the way that the authors organized their writing.  I also introduced students to Searchasaurus, accessed through the school library.  Here, they can get all kinds of good information!

Reading-In groups, students noted the features of some expository texts they have found.  We also met in Literature Circles.

Social Studies-We learned about the Mississippians, many of whom lived in Cahokia.

Math-We spent some time reviewing the distributive property and then went on to multiply by tens.

Word Study-Groups 1/2 did their word sort while Groups 3/4 prepared their words for the sort.

Homework:
Reading-Don't forget to bring in an example of expository text.

Writing-Write in your notebook if you haven't at least twice this week.

Math-WS 11.3, all

January 4th

Here's what we did today:
Writing-We explored the small African country of Rwanda and discussed the importance of being curious about the topic you choose.  That curiosity will show in the finished product!

Reading-We explored different non-fiction text features such as maps, diagrams, and the table of contents.  Students also met in groups to choose a new book for literature circles.  We will be having literature circles on Mondays and Thursdays each week.

Social Studies-We began Chapter 3 and learned about the Adena and Hopewell who lived about 3,000 years ago!

Math-We applied the distributive property to multiplication.

Word Study-Groups 3 and 4 got their words while Groups 1 and 2 prepared their words for tomorrow's sort.

Homework:
Reading-Be prepared for Literature Circle tomorrow!

Writing-All students need at least two Writer's Notebook (WN) entries by Friday.  They should spend at least 10 minutes writing one.

Math-WS 11.2, evens and all of the MR

January 3rd

Happy New Year!  I hope everyone had a great Christmas and New Year's and got lots of time to relax!  We got right back in the swing of things today and here's what we did:

Writing-We began a unit on expository writing.  Students will be writing a research paper on a country of their choice.  We will discuss how to evaluate sources, paraphrase, and much more.  This unit will take the majority of the third quarter and I encourage students to begin looking into different countries they may wish to research.

Reading-In keeping with the non-fiction theme from writing, we are learning about the non-fiction features of text.

Math-We began Chapter 11 by going over mental math with basic facts and lots of zeros!

Word Study-Groups 1 and 2 got their new lists.

Social Studies-We did a TFK about some important events from 2011.

Homework:
Reading-Just a reminder that students should be reading for at least 20 minutes per night.  Please help your child get into a good habit of reading nightly.

Writing-Students need to write in their Writer's Notebooks at least twice a week for at least ten minutes each time.  I have told them to date their entry and put an H by it to show that they wrote it at home.  The topic of the writing is their choice.

Math-WS 11.1

I sent home a sheet for the Six Flags Reading Minutes.  To earn a free ticket to Six Flags, students must read at least six hours by February 21 and have the sheet filled in and signed/initialed by a parent.
