Half Day Tomorrow!

I forgot to mention in the earlier post that tomorrow is a half day.  If your child will be going home differently than normal, please send a note.  Thanks!

March 29th

Here's what we did today:
Writing-We read about weather and students brainstormed how to write poems about the weather using the senses.

Reading-We went over a MAP review packet.

Social Studies-We learned about the causes of the Civil War and some events of the Civil War.

Math-We discussed metric units of weight reviewed metric conversions.

Homework:
Math-WS 25.4

March 28th

Here's what we did today:
Writing-We talked about how to use alliteration and assonance in poetry.

Reading-Students continued working on sequencing the events of Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt.

Social Studies-We talked about the Dred Scott Case, the Kansas-Nebraska Act, and watched a Dear America video about a young slave girl.

Math-We learned about capacity in the metric system.

MAP Prep-Students worked on a practice Reading packet.

March 27th

Here's what we did today:
Writing-Today, we learned about some different forms of poetry and discussed sensory details and personification in poetry.

Reading-We read Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt to integrate Social Studies and Reading.  Students sequenced the events of the story in order to create a summary.

Math-We learned how to make metric conversions today and continued measuring items in metric units.

We also spent some time on MAP prep today.  Your child should have a packet called Robin's Horn with them.  It is completed and we went over it in class, but you may want to look it over as it is a good example of what the MAP test will look like.

Homework:
Math-WS 25.2, practice side

March 26th

Welcome back!  I hope everyone had a great Spring Break!  I heard about a lot of great trips and family time today!  Here's what we did:
Writing-We are beginning our poetry unit and today we examined the use of sensory details in poetry.

Reading-Students visited the library.  We also talked about sequencing events in a story or a non-fiction writing piece by either time order or category.

Social Studies-We are back with Social Studies and are beginning with a study of the Civil War.

Math-We went over the customary tests today.  Because the 3rd quarter has ended, it is too late for students to correct their mistakes.  We did this together in class.  We also began a chapter on the metric system of measurement.

Word Study-For the next couple of weeks, we will be using the last half hour of the day for Word Study as well as MAP prep.  Today, students took the Words Their Way assessment so I can put them in the correct groups for 4th quarter.

Homework:
Reading-All students should have a great commitment book to read.

Writing-Write two entries this week!

March 14th

Here's what we did today:
Writing-We continued with our choice pieces.

Reading-We went over a MAP prep packet the students worked on last week and they began one that analyzes poetry.

Math-Today we looked at capacity in the standard system.

Spelling-Students continued working on the dice activity with their words.


Homework:
Math-WS 24. 4--Test is Friday--Students who will not be her Friday will take the test tomorrow and have the study guide with them to complete tonight.

March 13th

Here's what we did today:
Writing-Students are finishing up editing and publishing their choice pieces.

Reading-We learned how to understand rhythm, rhyme, and repetition in poetry.

Math-We worked on converting customary measurements.  Some students grasped this concept immediately and others are struggling.  They have a helpful diagram and chart in their Math notebooks to help with this, but may need homework help.

Word Study-Students continued working on the dice activity with their spelling words.

Read and Write!

Math-WS 24.3--Take your time!

Some students are bringing home a conference sheet that has your conferenc time listed.  These sheets do not have a place to sign so that I know the time will work for you, but please sign anyway.  If the time won't work, please let me know what time(s) will and I will do my best to accomodate you.

Also, spring picture proofs are due tomorrow.  Even if you do not wish to purchase spring pictures, please sign the slip so the school knows you got a chance to see them and decide.

March 12th

One more week before Spring Break!  Here's what we did today:
Writing-Students are finishing up their 3rd quarter choice pieces.

Reading-We visited the library and begin looking at poetry by having a poetry buffet.

Math-We measured things to their nearest fractional part, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8.  This was very difficult for a lot of students so I encourage them to take their time with tonight's homework.

Word Study-We took another look at the dice activity.

Homework:
Math-WS 24.2--Test Friday.  If any students will be gone Friday, please let me know because they will need to take the test on Thursday.

Science-Test Thursday

March 9th

Here's what we did today:
Writing-Students are at different phases of the writing process in working on their choice pieces.

Reading-We finished up some MAP prep we've been working on and worked more on point of view.

Math-We began a study of measurement today with some different stations exploring standard measurements of length.

Word Study-We are easing back into Word Study with a whole class list on commonly misspelled words.

March 8th

Here's what we did today:
Writing-Students continued revising and editing their choice pieces.

Reading-Students met in their literature circles to discuss the point of view of the characters.

Math-Students took the March Math Tungsten.

Mrs. Critchlow also came in for a counseling lesson this morning.

Homework:
Reading-Even though there is no literature circle book, students should still be reading an independent book for at least 20 minutes each night.  We will start literature circles again after Spring Break.

Math-Decimal tests were given back.  Some students need to make corrections.

Writing-Don't forget to write in your Writer's Notebook!

March 7th

Here's what we did today:
Writing-Students worked on revising their drafts and we talked about how to put voice in your writing.

Reading-Students took the March Reading Tungsten.

Math-Students took the decimal test.  We also made and learned about the 2D nets used to make 3D figures.

Homework:
Reading-Lit. Circles meet tomorrow.

March 5th

Here's what we did today:
Writing-Students continued with their choice pieces.

Reading-We discussed point of view including 1st and 3rd person and we also determined the author's point of view on a subject in an article.  Students met in literature circles as well.

Math-We learned how to compare and order decimals and students went through some stations.

Math2-We learned about 3D shapes and learned the vocabulary words face, edge, and vertex.

Homework:
Reading-Groups meet Thursday.  Students are to choose a character in the book and write at least one paragraph from that character's point of view.

Math-WS 30.1, WS 26.5, Decimal test will be on Wednesday.
*correct Math test--Some students were confusing area and perimter on the test and were using incorrect labels.  They need to correct these tests tonight in order to get points back.

**Please make sure to return the conference forms if needed so I can begin scheduling spring conferences.

March 2nd

I'm posting a bit early today as I will be out this afternoon for a doctor's appointment. 

Writing-Students continued drafting their choice pieces.

Reading-In honor Dr. Seuss's birthday, we watched a video of Justin Bieber reading The Cat in the Hat.  Students then completed a story chart to pull out some important elements of the story.

Math-Students took the test on Area and Perimter.

Today is also the Reward Party for February.

Homework:
Reading-Literature Circles meet on Monday.  Students have made a chart in their book to summarize the assigned chapters according to:Someone, Wanted, But, Then, So. 

Math-Just a Heads Up that the test on Decimals will be next Wednesday.  There is no Math WS this weekend.

***SPRING CONFERENCES--A note went home with all students today.  If I am requesting a parent conference, please fill out the bottom portion and send the note home. If I am not requesting a conference and you would still like to have one, please indicate that.  Otherwise, if I am not requesting a conference and you would not like one, the note does not have to be returned.

March 1st

Happy March!  Here's what we did today:
Writing-Students searched through their Writer's Notebooks for a piece that they would like to publish and began drafting it. 

Reading-Students met in Literature Circles and I also met with some groups to work on summarizing non-fiction.

Math-We spent all of Math working on the practice test for Area and Perimeter.

Homework:
Math-Study Chapter 28-29 (skip over circles in Chapter 28).  Tomorrow is the quiz!

Science-Don't forget the water bottles filled 3/4 of the way with oil.
