February 28th

Today in Math we reviewed for tomorrow's test.  In Writing, students continued their partner revisions.  In Reading we read Song and Dance Man and students wrote a 30 word summary with a partner.  I am really impressed with their ability to pull out only the main ideas! 

Homework:

Reading-Cold Read due tomorrow

Science-Students must have a water bottle filled 3/4 of the way with oil by TOMORROW

Math-Study Unit 6--test tomorrow

February 26th

Today in Math we took the practice test to review for Friday's Unit 6 test.  In Writing, students met in partners (see pics below) to revise their essays.  We used our Reading time to take the Social Studies test.

Homework:
Math-Study Unit 6!  Students have worksheets, chapter tests, and the online book to use to study from.

Science-Don't forget to bring a bottle filled 3/4 of the way with oil by Friday.

February 25th

I hope everyone enjoyed their surprise 4 day weekend!  Today we learned about Fahrenheit and Celsisus in Math, wrote our conclusion paragraphs in Writing, and visited the library in Reading.  Word Study groups 1 and 2 took their test today as well.

Social Studies-Test is WEDNESDAY (packet due as well)

February 20th

Today we learned about transformations in Math and the opening paragraph in Writing. In Reading we identified the Main Idea of a poem by Edward Lear.  Groups 1 and 2 did a buddy check in Word Study.  The students also returned to Science today!

Math-WS 19.4--All

Science-Bring a water bottle filled 3/4 of the way with cooking oil by next week. 

Social Studies-Chapter 5 test is Friday/Packet due Friday (If school is cancelled, the test will NOT be Friday as we need a day to review.)

February 19th

I hope everyone enjoyed their three day weekend!  Today in Math we learned about congruent and similar shapes.  In Writing, we discussed some ideas for how to end a paragraph creatively.  In Reading, we listened to Betty White read Harry the Dirty Dog on StorylineOnline and identified the Main Idea and Details.  Groups met as well and Groups 3/4 did their Word Sort.  In Social Studies we watched some of Little House on the Prairie.

Homework:
Math-WS 19.2--All  FYI-Unit 6 test will be 2/27.

Socials Studies-Chapter 5 test is Friday and packet is due as well.

Word Study-Groups 1/2--test Thursday, Groups 3/4--test Friday

February 15th

Today was a fun day with Jump Rope for Heart!  We also worked on our Rotational Symmetry projects (see photos below) and worked on our research papers.  Groups 1 and 2 met with me for their word sort.  In Social Studies, we learned about why Missouri is called the Gateway to the West and how the pioneer traveled on the different trails west. 

Homework:
Math-Because there is no worksheet, I suggest students go to the online book and study some of the geometry vocabulary from Chapters 17-19. 

**Please remember to fill out at least 7 addresses in the TFK books.  Students can still earn their free pen on Tuesday.  Thanks for your support!

Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day!  Today in Math students began a project to help them understand rotational symmetry.  I will post pictures when we finish.  They look awesome!  In Writing, we talked more about paragraph hooks and students continued writing their papers.  After lunch, we had our celebration.  Students passed out their Valentines and we watched Ella Enchanted while enjoying some trail mix and sherbert drinks!  Thanks for donating all the items for our trail mix! 

Don't forget that tomorrow is Jump Rope for Heart!

Social Studies-Chapter 5 test will be  next Friday, February 22nd.

February 12th

Today in Math we learned about the different types of quadrilaterals.  This lesson involved a lot of vocabulary words so it's important that students really think about their answers to tonight's homework.  In Writing, we discussed different ways to hook a reader in each paragraph of our country reports.  In Reading we worked on Main Idea and Details.  Groups 3 and 4 got their new words.

I hope everyone had a great weekend!  We have a busy week ahead of us so here's a quick run-down:

Friday-Jump Rope for Heart

Today in Math, students took the February eValuate and we went over last month's.  In Reading, we visited the library and heard from A Cricket in Times Square (Check out the video below!).  We began Chapter 5 in Social Studies and talked about pioneers, the War of 1812, and the MO Compromise.

Homework:

Reading-Students should be reading at least 20 minutes each night.  The best way to become a better reader is to read, read, read!

Serena-star of the week!


February 8th

Today in Math we learned how to identify triangles by both the lengths of their sides and the types of angles they have.  In Writing, students continued their research and worked on their body paragraphs.  This afternoon, students presented their literature circle books!  The videos are below.  Please check them out and leave comments!  Cricket in Times Square will present on Monday.  We also took the February Reading eValuate.

February 7th

In Math we learned about polygons.  Check out the pictures below for the kids in action!  In Writing, we learned about the organization of the body paragraph: hook, facts, closing.  In Reading, students had time to work on their lit. circle presentations for tomorrow and we went over last month's eValuate.  Groups 3 and 4 took their Word Study test.  Students took the Chapter 4 Social Studies test.

February 5th

Today in Math we learned about parallel, intersecting, and perpendicular lines.  In Writing, students continued with their research.  In Reading, students had a lot of time for their Daily Five activities and many chose to use technology to create a Wordle for the Spelling contract or Listen to Reading on Tumblebooks.  We finished the day with a TFK.

Reading-Finish TFK--students who were out of the room for Speech or another activity may have until Thursday to complete this.

Literature Circle Videos


February 4th

Today in Math students learned about the different types of angles.  We are using geoboards, toothpicks, the Educreations app and other manipulatives to learn all our geometry terms!  In Writing, students made good progress on their research and we distinguished between facts that would be interesting to include versus facts that are really important to include in our reports.  In Reading, students visited the library and met in their Literature Circles.  I'm going to try to upload some video footage from their groups :)  I met with Word Study Groups 3 and 4 to go over their sort and we watched a video on Lewis and Clark in Social Studies.

February 1st

Today in Math we began our unit on geometry!  We learned about lines, line segments, etc.  In Writing, we spent a lot of time practicing paraphrasing and discussing the importance of it.  In Reading, lit. circles met.  Groups 1 and 2 met with me to go over their word sorts and we watched a videon French explorers in Missouri in Social Studies.
